Understanding the LCOE Impact of Tandem Cells

Levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) is the number that ultimately decides whether a project gets financed. Efficiency gains matter only to the extent they move that number, so it is worth tracing the mechanism directly.

Where efficiency enters the LCOE equation

LCOE is, at its simplest, total lifetime cost divided by total lifetime energy output. A tandem module producing meaningfully more energy per panel changes both sides of that ratio:

  • The denominator grows. More energy is generated from the same fixed costs, land, interconnection, and installed capacity.
  • Fixed balance-of-system costs get spread thinner. Racking, wiring, and land costs that do not scale with efficiency are amortized over more kWh.

Why this matters more at some sites than others

The LCOE improvement is not uniform. It is most pronounced at land-constrained or interconnection-capped sites, where the project size is fixed regardless of module choice. In those cases, a tandem module that costs somewhat more per watt can still produce a lower LCOE than a cheaper silicon module, because the extra energy yield outweighs the incremental module cost.

What underwriters still want to see

LCOE models are only as credible as the degradation and stability assumptions feeding them. Lenders currently apply a risk premium to tandem projects until multi-year field degradation data closes the gap with silicon’s 25-year track record. As that data accumulates through 2026 and beyond, expect the financing discount on tandem projects to compress toward parity with silicon.
