From Lab to Line: What 30%+ Modules Mean for Project Economics

By TandemPanels Editorial

Efficiency headlines are easy to skim past, but the difference between a 22%-efficient silicon module and a 30%+ tandem module compounds across every line item in a project budget.

Same footprint, more power

The most direct effect is energy density. A rooftop or fixed parcel of land that produces, say, 500 kW of nameplate capacity with today’s silicon modules could produce closer to 680 kW with tandem modules at the same panel count - without expanding the footprint.

Ripple effects through balance-of-system costs

Higher efficiency per panel doesn’t just mean more energy - it reduces the number of panels needed to hit a target capacity, which in turn reduces:

  1. Racking and mounting hardware - fewer panels means less structural material per installed kilowatt.
  2. Labor hours - fewer physical units to mount, wire, and commission.
  3. Inverter and BOS sizing - in some configurations, tighter strings and simpler designs.

The land-constrained case

The economics are most dramatic for commercial rooftops and interconnection-constrained utility sites, where the available area - not capital - is the binding constraint on system size. In those cases, efficiency gains translate almost directly into additional annual energy yield with no incremental land or interconnection cost.

As tandem modules move from pilot lines to catalog products, expect efficiency-per-square-meter to become a standard line item in project economics models, alongside the traditional cost-per-watt metric.
