Scaling Perovskite Production: The Yield Challenge

Lab efficiency records get the headlines, but the metric that decides who wins the tandem manufacturing race is quieter: yield. Getting a perovskite top cell to work once on a test wafer is very different from getting it to work consistently across a gigawatt-scale production line.

Why perovskite yield is harder than silicon

Silicon processing has had three decades to mature into a remarkably forgiving, high-yield process. Perovskite deposition is younger and less forgiving:

  1. Film uniformity - a solution-processed layer only a few hundred nanometers thick has to be defect-free across an entire panel, not just a lab-scale coupon.
  2. Environmental sensitivity - humidity and temperature during deposition affect crystallization, and tolerances tighten as line speed increases.
  3. Interconnect losses - stacking a second cell adds interfaces where a single defect can cascade into a dead module.

What buyers should ask about

Procurement teams evaluating tandem suppliers are increasingly asking for yield data alongside efficiency numbers, not instead of them. A supplier quoting a 33% lab record but declining to share production yield figures is a signal worth following up on.

The scaling trajectory

Early commercial lines are reporting yield improving quarter over quarter as equipment vendors refine deposition tools built specifically for perovskite, rather than adapted from silicon processing. Expect yield, not raw efficiency, to be the metric that separates credible gigawatt-scale suppliers from pilot-line demonstrations over the next two years.
